Cupping has been practiced for over 2,000 years across China, Egypt and the Middle East. Today it is used by Olympic athletes and weekend warriors alike — and yes, those circular marks on Michael Phelps' shoulders were from cupping.
How cupping therapy works
Glass or silicone cups are placed on the skin and a vacuum is created — either with a small flame (traditional fire cupping) or a hand pump. The suction lifts the soft tissue upward, the opposite of regular massage, which compresses downward.
That lift draws blood to the area, breaks up adhesions in the fascia and gives the muscle a deep, satisfying release. Most cups stay in place for 5–10 minutes; sometimes the therapist glides them along the muscle with oil.
What the marks mean
The circular marks (sometimes red, sometimes purple) are not bruises in the painful sense — they are pooled blood at the surface, evidence that stagnant circulation has been freed. Darker marks usually mean more tension was present. They fade in three to seven days.
Who benefits from cupping
- Athletes recovering from training or competition
- Anyone with stubborn back, shoulder or neck tension that does not fully release with hands alone
- Migraine and tension-headache sufferers
- People with poor circulation in the upper back and shoulders
- Clients curious about traditional Chinese medicine
How it feels
The sensation is unusual the first time — a strong, steady pull rather than pressure. Most people describe it as "deeply relaxing" within a minute or two. There should be no sharp pain.
