Long before acupuncture, before shiatsu, before Thai massage — there was Tuina. Practiced in China for over 5,000 years, Tuina (pronounced "twee-na") is the original hands-on therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. If you have ever had a Korean, Japanese or Vietnamese massage and wondered where the dynamic, full-body, deeply-restorative style came from, the answer is Tuina.
What is Tuina?
The name literally means "push" (tui) and "grasp" (na). A Tuina therapist uses a precise vocabulary of techniques — pushing, kneading, rolling, pressing, vibrating, tapping and joint mobilization — applied along the body’s meridian lines and at specific acupoints. The goal is to move Qi (vital energy), release blocked circulation and restore balance to the muscles, joints and internal organs.
Unlike Swedish massage, Tuina is dynamic. The pace is brisker, the rhythms varied, and the therapist often works in shorter, more focused movements. You usually stay clothed in loose, comfortable wear. Oil is rarely used.
How Asian massage differs from Western massage
Walk into a spa in Seoul, Tokyo, Hanoi or Shanghai and you will notice the same family resemblance:
- Clothed sessions with loose cotton wear instead of oil and sheets
- Acupressure focus — the therapist works specific points along meridians
- Dynamic techniques — kneading, rolling, pressing, joint stretching, even gentle tapping
- A focus on energy flow as much as muscle tension
- Whole-body treatments that often include scalp, face, hands and feet
Modern Asian massage in Montreal blends these traditions with Western relaxation techniques — the best of both worlds.
What Tuina is best for
Tuina is exceptional for:
- Chronic neck and shoulder pain from screens and office work
- Lower back pain and sciatica
- Tension headaches and migraines
- Stiffness from old injuries
- Stress, anxiety and trouble sleeping
- Digestive issues (Tuina includes gentle abdominal work)
- Recovery after intense training
Many of our clients in downtown Montreal and NDG combine Tuina with cupping or gua sha — the three traditions complement each other beautifully.
What a Tuina session looks like at Massotherapy Jolie
You will start with a short conversation about your tension areas, sleep, energy levels and any health concerns. Wear comfortable clothing — yoga pants and a t-shirt are perfect.
The first part of the session typically focuses on the back, neck and shoulders with rolling and kneading techniques. Then the therapist works along the meridians of the arms and legs, pressing acupoints to release blocked circulation. A Tuina session may also include gentle traction, joint rotation and percussive tapping.
Sessions last 60 or 90 minutes. You leave feeling lighter, looser and noticeably calmer — Tuina has a strong effect on the nervous system, not just the muscles.
